HELA Press
Visual Identity and Book Series
Ongoing since 2025
Concept and design by Teo Schifferli Studio (Teo Schifferli, Vivien Pöhls; Typeface Martin Lostis)
HELA Press is an independent publishing house founded in London in 2025 by Helena Czernecka. Its catalogue brings together poetry, prose, and essays, exploring the relationship between image, performance, and text. The visual identity combines the accessibility of the traditional paperback with contemporary literary content, drawing on Polish cross-stitch embroidery as its central reference.
The embroidery patterns are translated into a modular dot-matrix typeface, forming the core of the identity. The Titles are published in Polish and/or English. Each edition features a unique pattern, creating individual cover designs that remain recognisably part of the same series. When a title appears in both languages, the editions share the same pattern, while subtle variations in the dots distinguish them, such as filled and outlined circles. Inspired by the ornamental frames of traditional literary hardcovers, the patterns form distinctive borders around each title. The system extends across social media, where the frames connect to form a continuous visual band. The logo can be used as a stamp or integrated into the cross-stitch patterns. Built on a consistent dot size and alignment, the identity creates a flexible visual language that connects the individual publications.
